Boston Shaker, OR Cobbler Shaker and a Mixing Glass
Recipe and Cocktail Ingredients
how to roll a cocktail
Sometimes a drink doesn’t need as much vigorous aeration as a full shake, but still could benefit from some dilution and needs incorporation. A perfect example of an ideal rolled drink is the Bloody Mary. Let's roll!
Add your cocktail ingredients to the tin, add fresh ice about ⅔ full.
Then you’re going to roll the cocktail with another tin or a pint glass, by pouring the liquid and ice from your shaker to glass, from the glass back to the shaker.
Continue for about 2 to 3 times and then pour everything into your serving glass, or strain and top with fresh ice.
tips for rolling cocktails
Rolling cocktails and free pouring (the art of measuring cocktails without jiggers by counting) was the beginning of flair-tending! We've all seen flashy, absurdly long-pours of liquid from over a shoulder into a glass far away. Think you've got what it takes to be the next Star-tender? With each pass of the "roll," see if you can slowly extend your glasses (or tins) farther away from each other and see how far you can go! Although, if you're just starting out, it might be a good idea to practice with water and roll your "drink" over the sink.
